Why was an educated intellectual woman called a ‘Bluestocking’? (Especially when the original Bluestocking was in fact a man!)
What is the difference between a Doxie and a Popsie (or a Strumpet and a Shrew?) And why are so many of these names quite frankly insulting!
We are holding a series of informative workshops to explore the history and cultural impact of the many and various names given to women throughout history.
We’ll also examine our personal responses to them by creating art works that illustrate and reveal the many layers of meaning these names have acquired over time.
The workshops will be led by The Field Theatre Group’s ’s heritage professionals and community artists. Do join us for a fascinating exploration of the origins and significance of these names, terms and words.
We’ll be offering opportunities to learn new skills, such as independent and group research and exhibition creation.
Our shared work will be celebrated in a touring exhibition which will launch at the Haddenham Art Centre, in the autumn of 2022.
