This exhibition will showcase Bill’s extraordinary talent and versatility as both a professional illustrator and accomplished artist. For his commissioned illustrations, he works almost exclusively with scraperboard, with which he produces both black and white and full colour artwork. He has done drawings for many newspapers, journals, book publishers, designers and advertising agencies in Britain and also in Europe and the USA. He was one of the team of artists and illustrators who contributed a stamp design (shipbuilding) to the Royal Mail Millennium celebration, and in 2005 he shared first prize in the V&A annual illustration Awards with the designer Steve Snider, for Book Cover and Jacket illustration. He has illustrated three bestselling books of poetry by the renowned poet and publisher Felix Dennis, and has contributed three covers to a dozen re-issued classic books by Puffin. He is rather proud that he is still regularly commissioned by the Radio Times, who were one of the original magazines to use his work over thirty years ago!

In Bill’s own words;

‘As a free-lance illustrator I draw my commissions in scraperboard, sometimes just plain black and white, sometimes with additional colour. I do sketch with other materials but the scraper medium is very comfortable for drawing out my own ideas too.
My painting -always in oils- is inspired by many subjects. Living next to a river which frequently overflows into its bordering meadows in winter gives me a lot of imaginative fuel. I often paint the same subject two or three times as some effects can ask to be treated in other ways or with different formats.’
