EVENT: Book Club

  • Haddenham Arts Centre 20 High Street Haddenham, cb6 3xa England (map)

Our friendly monthly (on Thursdays) get together, with books selected to read and chat about by the members themselves. New people are always welcome to join.

We always have room for more members and you are welcome to join us anytime. August book is Brotherless Night by V V Ganeshananthan.

Sixteen-year-old Sashi wants to become a doctor. But over the next decade, as a vicious civil war tears through her hometown of Jaffna, her dream takes her on a different path as she sees those around her, including her four beloved brothers and their friend, get swept up in violent political ideologies and their consequences. Desperate to act, she must ask herself: is it possible for anyone to move through life without doing harm?

Meetings are hosted by a former English Teacher and a regular volunteer at Haddenham Arts Centre. Kate loves to explore and discuss the historical context of the books, the countries they are set in and sometimes even theme the meetings around the book itself!

Our first shared read was chosen by Kate, but thereafter it will be each members turn to suggest a new title for the group to read.

Please purchase your own copy of each book to read. Second hand copies are usually available to buy online or new can be purchased from Toppings in Ely. If you live in Haddenham you may even be able to borrow a copy from the village library or Ely Library. If you would like further information or to know the current books being read please just ask.

Please call The Arts Centre on 01353 749188 to register your interest and let us know you will be attending .

There will be small charge on the day of £3.50 per person per meeting. Refreshments will be provided.

All proceeds will go towards supporting Haddenham Arts Centre.
